Happy New Year everyone! A new year and a new decade means new design trends and this is always a good time to talk about design trends. Design trends come and go with each new year. Experts talking about what's in and what's out, and then everyone scrambling around to change the look of their homes. There are trends for every aspect of design such as lighting, furniture, color, etc..

I am probably most excited about color making a comeback and the potential for Rose gold and millennial pink losing its popularity. I also haven't been a fan of all of the pink and gray I have been seeing on designer Instagram pages lately. While the designers who use this combination do it beautifully, it really just reminds me of the 1980's. Don't get me wrong that decade is near and dear to my heart but I prefer to not go back to the pink, gray and mauve colors. Please keep in mind that this is just my opinion and I would happily help someone create the perfect pink and gray living room or bedroom.

While I am not a fan of the pink and gray combo, I do like color and that is on trend for 2020. The Pantone color of the year is Classic Blue and really sets the stage for what's to come. Jewel tones are in. Bold and monochromtic colors like blue, green and aubergine can create a very bold and daring space. Cool tones are out and the use of rich rustic colors can spice up any neutral space. Black and white is huge this year as well and in my opinion is timeless and versatile. Used with a bold pattern it can really create a dramatic space.

I recently changed the jewel toned color scheme in my home about 2 years ago to a more neutral palette of gray, beige and white like many others. Some people may be panicking and thinking they need to make huge changes. This is not really a problem, because you can easily bring in pops of color with accent pieces such as pillows, art and throws. These small changes can change the look of an entire room with minimal cost. I actually found some very cute pillows from West Elm that can easily be used on a neutral sofa to bring some color into a space using muted jewel tones.

Interior design trends will come and go but a neutral palette with always be timeless. It's also important to remember that the color trend does not mean that your gray and white rooms are dated. It's a clean, classic, timeless look and adding some color can create a fresh modern look to update any space for the new decade.
